Alternative career paths for your coding skills

About this session

You’ve worked diligently to learn how to write code, improve your technical skill set, and prepare for a tech career. But what if you don’t want to be a software developer? Fortunately, there are many alternative career paths for people with coding skills beyond a standard software engineer role. From product management to solutions engineering to technical recruiting, there are countless roles where you can apply your coding knowledge without writing code all day.

Our speaker, Michael Rao, is a Senior Solutions Consultant at Iterable and a Northwestern University Coding Boot Camp graduate. Michael will share how he has utilized his coding skills in non-traditional ways and discuss how you can think outside the box about all the career paths that need your skills.

Key takeaways

  1. There are many alternative career paths if you don’t want to be limited to a traditional developer role. For example, a solutions engineer’s role is to explain technical concepts and prototype solutions.
  2. In other roles, such as a solutions consultant, you support account executives and prospects as they learn products, build trust with stakeholders, and provide a realistic perspective to internal teams about the likelihood of closing deals.
  3. While having experience in product management is not essential,  it does help to have strong developer, organizational, and people skills.
  4. Many solution consultants transition to product management because of their technical skills.
